Heartland Christian Athletic Association, (HCAA), has announced the All-State Basketball players for the 2020 school year. HCAA is an association of Christian Schools which includes high schools from Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Players are selected to the All-State teams based on nominations from member school coaches.
This year Lakewood Christian School has three high school basketball players chosen to receive this honor. Rodrick White, a senior, was selected based on averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. Malik Laurent, a junior, scored 14.9, 10.4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Brayden Sexton was selected for Honorable Mention. Brayden produced 7.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1 assist per game. The only Lady Lion from Lakewood selected for the All-State team was Kelaiah Keith, a sophomore. Kelaiah scored 14.1 points per game with 4.5 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

print articleMcAlester’s Lakewood Christian School has accomplished a feat every team who wins a Championship aspires to achieve. They have won their second consecutive Heartland Christian Athletic Association High School Basketball Championship! Back to Back Champions!
The Heartland Christian Athletic Association, (HCAA), is comprised of teams from four states, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Teams are placed in one of three classifications, 3A, 2A, and 1A according to their enrollment. Lakewood is a 1A school, but, petitioned up to compete in 2A. The top eight teams in each classification are selected to participate in the championship bracket.
The HCAA’s championship basketball tournament is a single elimination affair which is held on three consecutive days. Lakewood won their first game against Christian Ministries Academy, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, 81-51. Malik Laurent was the high scorer with 23 points with Caden Salyers adding 22 point and Rodrick White and Noah Hurst contributing 13 and 11 respectively.
The second game was against Wright Christian Academy of Tulsa. Lakewood outscored Wright by a margin of 3, 54-57. Lakewood was hampered with 21 turnovers to Wrights 9. Malik Laurent was the leading scorer with 22 points, followed by Rodrick White with 16.
The Championship game was against Garrett Memorial of Hope, Arkansas. The game was closely contested through the first three quarters with Lakewood up by 7 at the half. The Lakewood Lions pulled away in the second half to win the game 81-68.
The Lions employed a box and one defense the whole game with Daimon Ellis and Noah Hurst taking turns shutting down Garrett Memorial’s number one scoring threat, Jordan Keener, by limiting him to only 11 points, far below his reported average of 20 points a game. Caden Salyers was the high point man in this contest with 21 points. Rodrick White and Malik Laurent scored 20 and 16 respectively.
Anthony Salyers is the Head Coach with Greg Ellis and Steve Butcher assisting. Lakewood Christian School is a Private Christian School located on George Nigh Expressway here in McAlester. print articleThe Lakewood Christian School Lady Lions Basketball team has done the unexpected! For the second year in a row the Lady Lions Junior High Basketball Team has won the Heartland Christian Athletic Associations, (HCAA), Girl’s Basketball Championship!
The top HCAA Christian teams from Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma are invited toparticipate. The Lady Lions were required to win three games in three consecutive days to claim the Championship.
The first game was against Wesleyan Christian Academy. Ti’Heiress Davis led all scorers with 20 points, Addie Kropp added 7 to the total of 34 points scored by the Lady Lions against 12 for Wesleyan. The full court pressure applied by the Lady Lion defense was smothering for Wesleyan.
The second game in pursuit of the Championship was against Life Christian Academy. The full court press was again used with great effectiveness. The Lady Lions held Life Christian Academy to 15 points for the game. The Lakewood Lady Lions scored 32.
In the Championship game the opponent was Arkansas Christian Academy. The Lady Lions were hampered by the early game loss of Addie Kropp due to an ankle injury. Trailing 7-4 at the end of the first quarter the Lady Lion defensive superiority provided the edge for the remainder of the game. Ti’Heiress Davis scored 33 points and Rachelle Dowell contributed 9 towards the final score of 48-20 to complete their Championship Win!
The Lady Lions are coached by Head Coach Greg Ellis and assisted by Coaches Anthony Salyers and Steve Butcher.
